Sherry GreerI come from a very artistic family. My mom, dad, and big brother are all very talented in a variety of fine arts and crafts. Growing up in a household like that, I have tried just about every craft out there (anyone remember needlepunch embroidery? Yep, I did that too!). In college, I started working part-time in fabric and craft stores, and by the time I finished my degree in biology, I knew that I wanted to pursue something more artistic than counting endangered dung beetles or testing river water pH. Though I'm mostly self-taught, I love learning new skills, and am always taking classes to further my crafty knowledge. I've studied stained glass, wire-wrapping, decorative painting, lampworking, Viking knitting, cake decorating, silversmithing, and precious metal clay, and I've taught classes in several of these methods. Of all the crafts I've dabbled in, though, jewelry is my favorite. It is the perfect balance of design, technique, and time. This ADHD chick just doesn't have the patience to knit a sweater or paint a masterpiece! I've been a "Celtophile" ever since a high school trip to Ireland, and Celtic knotwork particularly appeals to me. So when an eccentric gentleman by the name of Dave Love tied me my first real, tangible Celtic knot, an idea started to form. After six months of staring at that knot and playing with string, Lady Penguinevere Designs was born. Though I credit Dave for getting me started in this venture, my knotwork has evolved into something entirely unique from his or any Celtic knotter's work. I rarely make the same design twice, and I specialize in designing custom pieces for my customers at Celtic festivals and now, here, on this website. Todd GreerTodd has been my best friend and greatest fan for 16 years. He has always supported and encouraged my artistic endeavors, even when it wasn't exactly in his best interest; he has been drug along to nearly every show I've sold at for the last 6 years! But he has always gone willingly and kept a great sense of humor through 110 degree heat, torrential downpours, fire ants, cow patties, and all manner of other 'challenges' common to outdoor shows in Texas! And he still talks to me come Monday! When I first started Lady Penguinevere Designs, Todd came along mainly to help with the heavy lifting and to keep me company, but that didn't last for long. Despite his fervent protestations to the contrary, Todd has quite an eye for design, and has become my one-man research and development department. All of LPD's best knots were products of Todd's brilliance (and boredom!) Nowadays, Todd not only helps with set-up, money handling, customer service, and knot design, but also makes custom pieces for customers! Who ever would have thought that a gifted computer programmer would also be a talented jewelry maker! I'm so very fortunate to have his help and support, and I love him dearly! |
